Sponge Filtration

They are widely used in aquariums, both as prefilters and cartridges for internal filters, such as Pat Mini or Turbo 500. When used as a prefilter in cascade or bucket filters, they effectively trap larger debris, such as dead plant leaves or food scraps, while protecting the internal media from clogging quickly.

In turn, in internal filters, the sponge can serve as the main filtration medium, ensuring effective mechanical and biological filtration. The fine structure of the sponge allows for the thorough capture of detritus (dead organic matter), while also providing an excellent surface for the growth of beneficial nitrifying bacteria, which are responsible for maintaining the biological balance in the aquarium.

Compared to standard cartridges supplied by manufacturers, our sponges stand out thanks to their carefully selected gradation – most original cartridges are either too porous (which results in a rapid decline in performance) or too fine (which means that smaller contaminants are not effectively retained).

The sponges are made of polyurethane foam with a regular structure and open pores. This material is chemically neutral – it does not affect water parameters, ensures optimal filtration, and does not release any substances. The foam sold is of the Filtren type, which is foam designed specifically for liquid filtration.

Important!

We offer two versions of sponges: with a gradation of 30 PPI and 45 PPI. For use as a prefilter, we recommend 30 PPI gradation – it traps larger contaminants and does not restrict filter flow. However, as the main filter medium in internal filters, we suggest choosing a 45 PPI grade, which provides better mechanical filtration and a larger surface area for nitrifying bacteria.

It can serve as a pre-filter for cascade and bucket filters, effectively preventing the rapid clogging of the actual filter media inside the filter. It protects small aquarium animals, such as small fish, fry, and shrimp, from being sucked inside. Alternatively, in smaller internal filters, such as the Pat Mini or Turbo 500, it can serve as the main form of filtration.
